چکیده

The study and evaluation of hardwood seedling quality has been attracting more attention in recent years. This is in contrast to the many decades of extensive research on conifer seedling quality. As demand and production of hardwood seedlings increase, a need arises for efficient, replicable, and practical approaches to quality assessment. Many methods of determining conifer seedling quality may be transferred to hardwood production systems. However, the genetic, morphological, and physiological characteristics of hardwoods merit special consideration when applying these concepts. Current techniques for evaluating seedling quality are

10 Abstract. Research regarding seedling quality issues has been performed for decades and focused 11 primarily on conifer species, which comprise the greatest proportion of nursery production 12 worldwide. Demand for hardwood seedlings, particularly for conservation purposes, has increased 13 steadily in recent years, emphasizing the need for seedling quality assessment protocols specific to 1...

Electrolyte Leakage from Stem Tissue as an Indicator of Hardwood Seedling Physiological Status and Hardiness

—It is important to identify rapid and accurate methods for assessing hardwood seedling quality and physiological status. Evaluation of electrolyte leakage (EL) from plant tissues is promising for this purpose. It has successfully predicted the physiological status of conifer seedlings and has been used experimentally on European hardwood species. Three species of hardwoods, northern red oak (Q...

Success of Hardwood Tree Plantations in Indiana and Implications for Nursery Managers

The purpose of our study was to address the lack of information on the success of hardwood tree plantations established on nonindustrial private forestlands as it relates to the silvicultural practices employed during the first 5 years following planting. Through a telephone survey of afforesting private landowners and a field assessment of their plantations in Indiana, we found that seedling s...

The lack of adequate quality assurance/quality control data hinders the assessment of potential forest degradation in a national forest inventory

Hardwood lumber harvested from the temperate broadleaf and mixed broadleaf/conifer forests of the east-central United States is an important economic resource. Forest industry stakeholders in this region have a growing need for accurate, reliable estimates of high-quality wood volume. While lower-graded timber has an increasingly wide array of uses, the forest products sectors in those states w...

Using Electrolyte Leakage for Evaluating Hardwood Seedling Cold Hardiness

This paper describes the use of electrolyte leakage (EL) from stem tissue as a potential method for assessing cold hardiness of hardwood seedlings. The EL method has seen little use with North American hardwoods, but has successfully predicted conifer hardiness in both controlled and operational settings and has been used experimentally on hardwoods in Europe. Three species of hardwoods—norther...
